How to Enter Britannia

Three pieces of art: a client, the world's data, and a single line of config.

I

OBTAIN A CLIENT — CLASSICUO

The community-built modern client. Open source, no installer, runs on every desk.

Unzip somewhere. On Apple Silicon, Rosetta is required (one-click prompt on first launch).

II

OBTAIN THE GAME DATA — UO RENAISSANCE

The art, maps, sounds, animations — the visible world itself. ClassicUO does not bundle these; thou must furnish them.

The fastest path: UO_Renaissance_Client_Full.exe (~340 MB). On macOS, open with The Unarchiver to extract without running the .exe. On Windows, run the installer; you may afterward uninstall it — only the data folder matters.

Move the extracted .mul files to a folder thou shalt remember — for example ~/Desktop/Ultima Online.

III

POINT CLASSICUO AT SERPHOLD

Edit settings.json next to the ClassicUO binary. Change five lines, leave the rest alone:

// settings.json — only these five matter
"ip": "play.uo.charleschen.ai",
"port": 10000,
"ultimaonlinedirectory": "/path/to/your/UO/data",
"clientversion": "1.26.4",
"ignore_relay_ip": true

ignore_relay_ip is necessary because the server announces itself by an internal address; thy client must ignore that and continue speaking to the gate it walked through.

IV

LAUNCH AND ENTER

macOSFrom a Terminal in the ClassicUO folder: arch -x86_64 ./ClassicUO.bin.osx
WindowsDouble-click ClassicUO.exe.

At the login screen, invent any account name and password. The shard creates the account on first sight. Choose a character, choose Britain, walk out into the night.

WHENCE THIS SHARD CAME

SERPHOLD runs draxinar/ouo — a clean-room reverse engineering of the original Ultima Online server, painstakingly disassembled from UoDemo.exe, the playable demo shipped on the 1998 Second Age retail disc.

Every function carries the address of the original 1998 binary in a comment. The world data, NPC scripts, and item resources are the production data extracted from Origin Systems' servers on the 2nd of June, 1998 — barely a month before the game's official launch.

This is not a re-imagining. This is a recovery.

EXCERPTS · CIRCA · MCMXCVIII

From the Library of Britannia

Texts as found in the original world data, written for the launch of Ultima Online.

Deceit: A Dungeon of Horrors
— Mercenary Justin

My employers have oft taken me into this den of hideous creatures, and I thought that it behooved me to write down what I know of it, now that I am retired from the life of an adventurer for hire.

Deceit was once a temple to forgotten powers of old. It was taken over by mages who eventually were driven out by the depredations of their own evil lackeys.

The Burning of Trinsic
— Paladin Japheth

'Twas a sight to see, the sunlight falling lightly on the sandstone walls of Trinsic 'pon a morning in spring. Children ran along the parapets and walkways, their laughter providing music to the daybreak, despite their oft-ragged clothing.

The guards who maintained a vigilant outlook from atop the towers would smile indulgently as children slammed into their armored legs and brushed past them.

The Bold Stranger
— Old Fabio the Poor

In a time before time, the Gods that Be assembled a group of artisans, craftsmen and lore masters (for, yes, even in those days, art existed) to create the world of Sosaria.

To this group, the gods gave a tiny world, Rytabul, in which to test their works, to see if they were of the quality desired for the true world in which they would be placed.

A Dispatch from Origin

The actual update.txt shipped with the production server, recovered with the rest.

ORIGIN SYSTEMS · INTERNAL
2 JUNE 1998

We are ready to continue the implementation of the Reputation System.

Today is the second phase of the process, which is publishing to a single server. We will be updating the Great Lakes Shard at 2:00 CST today. We will be monitoring this server closely throughout the day.

If everything runs normally, we will continue to the third phase of the process on Thursday by updating the remaining public servers.

Verbatim from rundir/update.txt, the patch-notes file present in the production server data extracted on the 2nd of June, 1998. Reproduced unaltered.
